Smashing snow success

The opening weekend of the snow season was declared a smashing success with visitors converging on Mount Hotham in their droves.

Officially, the number of people entering the Mount Hotham Alpine Resort broke all records for an opening weekend since management started documenting daily visitation.

Visitor numbers were up 130 per cent on 2018’s opening weekend and up 114 per cent on the five-year average.

“This start to the season is a great kick-off for our local businesses and accommodation providers and the mood is very positive,” Anita Coia, of Mount Hotham Alpine Resort Management, said.

“We literally had thousands of cars arriving.

“With a good proportion of terrain open for the weekend, we were pleased to see visitors from the breadth of the snow visitor spectrum having a good time,” Ms Coia said.

Mount Hotham had a good base of one metre of snow over the weekend.

Rain on Monday reduced the base slightly but with more snowfalls expected later this week, it’s expected to maintain a robust cover.

Ms Coia said the opening weekend attracted everyone from first-timers to seasoned regulars.
